Will I be sore after the chiropractor?
After visiting the chiropractor for the first time, the most likely sensation will be that (i)you don’t feel any different (yet!) or (ii) you feel looser, lighter, or more relaxed. It usually takes a few sessions to notice improvements in symptoms, but some people will feel relief after the first session. The odd person may feel a bit sore after the first session—if the joints are particularly inflamed—in which case the chiropractor will adapt the treatment accordingly for the next session.
Some people feel energetic or even a bit euphoric after a session, other people will feel relaxed. It varies. When we take pressure of the nerves of the central nervous system, it can sometimes change the health significantly.
If the muscles relax a lot after the session, they may release a lot of toxins that the liver needs to metabolise, so you may feel tired for a few hours until the liver clears the lactic acid out of you blood stream, but you will feel better for it the next day.
My personal speciality is gentle chiropractic, but I always make sure I do the first session of treatment very gently because it may be the first time the vertebrae have been moved in a long while.
What should I do after chiropractic adjustment? Are you supposed to rest after the chiropractor?
After each session try to avoid sitting down for 10 minutes as this may jam things up again. Movement is good after a chiropractic session, so most chiropractors, including myself, recommend a 5-10 minute walk. Try not to jump straight back in the car. Gentle movement is better than rest after a session. In many cases you can even do sport, but check with your chiropractor for specific advice (in case there is a lot of inflammation).
