What is the thing that chiropractors use that sounds like a stapler?
63% of chiropractors use a device called an “Activator” to help loosen restricted joints in the spine. Patients tend to call it the “clicky thing” because of the noise it makes. Some chiropractors only use this device and nothing more, but most chiropractors use this just as an additional technique. The Activator is a small, spring-loaded hammer with a rubber tip that can be pressed against the spine over an area of spinal restriction.
This device is very gentle, the level of pressure it delivers is precisely controllable and can be varied, and it has a very localised effect. It makes it very handy for use on the extremities (wrist, foot, elbow) too. A softer tip can be applied so that it can even be sued for a very gentle, localised release on babies.
Why do chiropractors use a drop table?
Another technique that chiropractors can use (used by 56% of chiropractors) is called a Thompson Drop Table. In this technique part of the table can lift slightly—only about one centimetre or so—then drop down as the chiropractor pushes on the patient’s back. This mechanically assisted technique helps release the joints. It is particularly effective on the pelvis which is a larger joint. This method is more commonly used in the lower back, but can be used at all levels of the spine.
What techniques does Stefan use in his practise?
I personally use the most common technique—Diversified Technique—to push on the spinal joints to gently release them. (My speciality is gentle chiropractic.) But I use the Activator, Thompson Drop adjustments, and Gonstead (another technique of pushing with the hands) as well because different people respond to different methods.
