Is yoga better than chiropractic?

Yoga and chiropractic have a lot of similar benefits, but their ultimate goals are quite different, so you can’t say that one is better than the other. In fact, used in conjunction with each other, they can form a formidable combination for health and wellbeing.

What does Yoga do?

Yoga has many forms. Different techniques can focus on the spiritual level, mental wellbeing and relaxation, flexibility, strength, general health, or even aerobic aspects. Most people tend to use it for relaxation and/or maintaining flexibility (and strength). Stretching and mobilising the joints and muscles can have a great effect on the musculo-skeletal health. This is turn, especially when combined with the mindfulness concepts, can have a deep relaxation effect on stressed people too.

What does Chiropractic do?

The aim of Chiropractic is to loosen restricted spinal joints to improve health and wellbeing. Jammed spinal joints can cause inflammation, muscle tightness, or nerve irritation. By releasing these specific areas of the spine, a chiropractor can not only often decrease pain, stiffness and tightness, but by reducing the irritation to spinal nerves it is thought to be help the general health of the patient.

Can Yoga free up stuck joints like a chiropractor?

Stretching the spine and muscles with yoga can help to loosen restricted areas of the spine, but it is very hard to be really specific like a chiropractor can be. A chiropractor can isolate an adjustment to one specific vertebral level, even a specific direction. If a spinal restriction is mild, yoga can loosen a joint, but if the restriction is chronic (or has muscle spasm or inflammation around it), the ability of the chiropractor to localise the release can be key.

Can you do Yoga and Chiropractic at the same time?

The combination of Yoga and Chiropractic can be awesome. The Yoga can strengthen and stretch muscles and get blood flowing through soft tissue. It can relax stressed people. This makes it easier for a chiropractor to release specific jammed joints. Yoga can then help to maintain the new movement.

How do you know if you’re “out of alignment”?
